The floating reed islets
They are made of a mix of roots, herbs, reed, organic material and soil. The roots of reed are very important; where gas accumulation which leads to the emerging of the layer and its tearing because of the wind. Their width varies from 0.50 to 1.50 m. These reed islets occupy large areas in the Danube Delta and depending on the water level and their width, they can be:
   - mobile: moving along the lakes under the action of wind and stream;
   -
stuck: in shallow areas where the level water is low;
   -
fixed on other stuck reed islets, but having water underneath, which represents an excellent habitat for species of fish such as: catfish, carp, crucian.

The greatest developping of the reed islets is found in the lake complex Rosu-Lumina-Puiu.

The Danube Delta is the largest area of reed thickets in the world 1560 km2.
You can see in the picture a small reed islet in the wind, floating at random. This flood patch was formed in the Lumina lake as a consequence of the incoming of more reed islets brought here by the wind. A few weeks after, that which seemed a very strong bank, tore apart because of winds and streams, and the resulting parts were pushed to other sides of the lake.
This moving of reed islets can be very dangerous, as some channels can be closed in this way and the sailing would be very difficult. One more is that fishermen's tackle can be dragged away or torn by these mobile reed islets. Closed access ways are freed harder, but when the reed islets are well stuck, they are cut with the jigsaw, creating marrow paths for the boats.
In some places, the boat is literally pulled over the reed islet. You can see in the picture one place where I had to pull the boat over a pile of reed islets which have blocked the way because of the wind direction.

Flood patch in the Lumina lakes.
The reed islets can be compared to pieces of a puzzle that are blown about on the surface of a lake and get to be stuck at random in one of its sides. They have different shapes and dimensions and there usually remain water portions between them, and these are the flood patches, excellent fishing places. The Lumina and Puiu lakes are separated by a reed islet wall. In some places there are paths that connect the two lakes and through which the fish pass, too. Experienced fishermen set their fishing tackle in these places, and as underneath the reed islets as possible.
