The Caraorman fishery
All over the Danube Delta there are quite a few centers of collecting the fish, called fisheries. They are generally built of local materials, and the reed roof ensures a good thermic isolation mainly during the summer time when temperatures are high and can lead to the rottening of fish. In the refrigerating rooms the cooling is done with ice, which is transported here all the way from Tulcea.

In Caraorman the fishery is in the east side of the village, on the left side of the Caraorman channel; here fish from many lakes (Puiulet, Puiu, Lumina, Rotund, Iacub) is collected.

One can admire at the Caraorman fishery large quantities of fish and impressing captures. Huge carps are something normal and habitual, and sheat fish weighing 40-50 Kilos aren't a surprise anymore.
In a day's time a few tons of fish can be collected, it is sorted, weighed and kept in a cool place, for it to be transported to Murighiol or Tulcea.

Caraorman is a fishermen village: they spread their fishing nets in the lakes and channel around the village. In the picture taken at the fishery, you can see a lotca (boat) with the fish caught in a trawl.
