The adventure in the Danube Delta.
August 2001
Along with two of my friends, Miti and Laur, the latter being a beginner in matters of fishing, we have spent 6 extraordinary days in Delta, between the 30th of July and the 3rd of August. We rowed in my grandfather's boat through the delta's channels and lakes, we slept in a tent in the middle of nature, we fed among others, on the fish we caught, which give us a great satisfaction, and of course we fished a lot.

In the image below we've got Laur, the beginner, catching his first fish: a ratter stunted perch; not to mention that he caught it in the best location of catching nearby Caraorman (at the crossroad between the Caraorman channel with the Iacob Channel). In spite of the number of fishermen in the area (about 10), after seeing Laur's 'sensational' capture, we pitched our tent and left for another place on the Litcov Channel. There, just below the high voltage wires that cross the Litcov Channel, there is a pit as deep as 5-6m depth, where we fished for catfish using that day's favourite bait: frogs.

This is the largest item I have ever caught! While fishing, I was suddenly looked to what I through would be a sensational capture. After a ratter short "struggle" I conceived in getting to surface the log in the image, out of the depths of the Litcov Channel with a nylon of 0,35 mm which holds up to 6-7 kilos!

Miti on the Litcov Channel, with his capture, a catfish at about 1 kilo. At about 100 meters downstream, the Litcov Channel meets the Suez Channel, and that's a good spot for perch fishing. The perch regularly went for frog, worms, leech's, snails. Miti faced an event that left him with a strong impression; we were fishing for perch, each one with a semi-automatic fishing rod, from the boat, using leech as bait. Suddenly, Miti's rod moved pretty strong, and to my surprise, it went to other way. Miti had tried to calm the fish which was furiously floundering, until we heard a snapshot and everything went back to the peace and quiet before that. A 0,35 mm, that made the rod bend like that, wouldn't break so suddenly unless it were something big, and never for a perch, be it a big one, too). Judging by the force of the attack, we presumed it had been a carp or a zander, as a sheat fish wouldn't have been so aggressive. We had heard that one can also-catch carp in this place but we haven't been that lucky.

The only pike (1 kilo) on the 1st of August, in the morning on a perfect day for pike-fishing (during summer). We were in the Swan's Nest lake and there was a strong wind and a full moon. There was quite an amount of hornwort in the lake but with a help of a light spoon (8-10g) y managed to get along pretty well: that is to recoup without picking up to much hornwort. The pike though, wasn't very decided: it explored mostly and was quite shy, except the one in the image. Y was to find out that the next summer (2002) the pike bit pretty well in this lake. The picture is taken on the Litcov Channel.

Miti and Laur under the improvised shelter which guarded us from the burning sun. Because of the heat, there wasn't any move in the water between 12 o'clock and 3 p.m., except maybe some perch., but we didn't have the strength to continue fishing. There wasn't any weeping willow nearby to offer any shadow, so we had to 'build' something. It was an indefinite thing and therefore we couldn't name anyway.

Nearby the village, as a consequence of the flood in the 70's, a protection dyke was crashed, and two deep pits with clear water were formed. Here one can catch pike, crucian and pench. Here, we were astonished at the aggressively of the jades, taking into account the large size of our spoons as compared to their size. Miti with one of his slim jacks, which was afterwards set free.

Miti with a catfish in this automatic rod, on a good day of fishing.
Being that the place was still a pit in a channel with steep shores and bordered by mace reed, my two friends preferred fishing from the boat, each one with a semiautomatic rod. Y was the only one with two rods, and y couldn't handle all by myself the attack which lasted for about three hours.

After 3 hours of fishing, Laur is satisfied after a successful fishing. You can see here my grandfather's boat of 13 ribs; it was the one that give us a lot of freedom of movement, and it made our vacation so nice. In the local dialect, the boat is also known as "lotca".

Fishing for perch:
We're on the best spot for perch fishing nearby Caraorman (at the confluence of 3 Channels), after a fishing for sheatfish, when anything else moved because of the heat. Sometimes we even caught two at a time. Bait: worms, leeches, frogs, snails, and y don't believe they would have refused anything!

Somewhere near the village, on a way through the mace reed, through burning heat and exhausted, but pleased of the captures in that day and of the vacation we had spent! Laurentiu had the beginner's luck that day and caught the biggest fish a sheatfish wheing about 1,5 kilos. The biggest "catch" belongs to me: the log above.

Conclusions: Sheatfish went for worms, frogs, leeches pretty good; The perch went for worms and leeches; In what concerns carps, we've only seen (sun) them jump and making waves. (the truth is that we've never tried to fish for carp, but we might as well had caught a scale carp, but …). The pike capture was very small, only a few slim jacks in the "pit" and one weighing 1 kilo in the "Swan's Nest" Lake, where by the way it was more interesting to bird watch than to fish (let aside irony, this lake is famous for its actual possibilities of bird watching
